Navicat for MySQL 17: Empowering Smarter Business Decisions Jul 26, 2024 by Robert Gravelle

On May 12th, Navicat added several major updates to existing products, including Navicat Premium, Navicat BI, and Navicat Data Modeler. One of the most popular Navicat tools, Navicat for MySQL, also benefitted from the new updates, receiving much of the same exciting new features as Navicat Premium. Today's blog will be covering just a few of the improvements that you'll find in the new Navicat for MySQL 17.

A Brand New Modeler!

We learned about Navicat Data Modeler 4 in a previous blog. It utilizes a single workspace that incorporates several databases, as well as models, diagrams, and other related objects. As we saw, this approach allows users to illustrate different model objects within a single diagram as well as facilitate efficient switching between models, cross-model management, and sharing of model workspaces. Navicat for MySQL 17 comes with the same functionality built-in.

Models support Functions and Procedures, which allows you to pre-define processes and operations during the modeling stage.

Data Dictionary

The Data Dictionary has become an integral document for both information systems and research projects. As the name suggest, the Data Dictionary contains names, definitions, and attributes about data elements stored within a database. We learned about the Data Dictionary as well as Navicat 17's new Data Dictionary tool in the Create a Data Dictionary in Navicat 17 blog article. Accessible from either the Model or main Navicat window, the Data Dictionary tool guides you though every step of the process of creating a highly professional finished document.

It provides a visual and comprehensive view of your data at the click of a button! You can find the Data Profiling tool in all Enterprise editions of Navicat database development and management tools, including Navicat for MySQL 17.

As you can see in the above screen capture, the Data Profiling tool offers a range of visual charts to represent the profiling results. These charts are a great way to analyze data types, formats, distributions, and informative statistics within your datasets.

Table Profiles

The "Exploring Table Profiles in Navicat 17" blog article explored the new Table Profile feature, which allows us to save different combinations of filters, sort orders, and column displays that are frequently used for the table.

Having the ability to save table profiles is a tremendous time saver because you can switch between multiple configurations quickly, without having to reconfigure the table each time you access it.

Other Notable Improvements

  • Navicat URI: The server object URI may now be shared among team members, thus promoting collaboration.
  • BI: As described in this Navicat BI tutorial, all charts on a dashboard using the same data source can now be interconnected. Hence, selecting any data point on one of the charts instantly updates all of the other charts on the same dashboard page that share the same data source to reflect your selection.
